Soft shell crab regs. Columbia River.
Being the skipper, I always want to know the rules exactly and eliminate any grey area's as to what, where, when, and how we can catch and eat something. I sent an email to WDFW about the soft shell crab situation on the CR. Oregon lets you keep them. Washington says no. I was under the misconception I could just buy an Oregon shellfish license and be good to go. Doesn't work that way. Here is the response from WDFW. Hope it clears up some confusion. Mr. Dow, I am in receipt decorum of your e-mail inquiring about the shellfish laws at the mouth of the Columbia River. When laws differ from State to State the fisher must follow the rules for the port you are landing regardless if they have an Oregon or Washington license. To clarify, anyone with an Oregon license that would like to take softshell crab must land those softshell crab in Oregon. Most of our laws have come together but there are a few like this that are different. There are other laws such as rockfish. Oregon has a 7 fish limit and we have a 10 fish limit. So if fishing rockfish on the South Jetty fishers must follow the 7 fish limit because they are fishing in Oregon. Rule of thumb, if landing in Washington follow the rules for the Washington. If you have any questions please e-mail or give me a call. <img id="yiv963211734Picture_x0020_1" alt="WDFW Patch no enforcement.png" height="183" width="127"> Sergeant decorum Dan Chadwick Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Program Region 5, Vancouver
This decorum has come up before about crab fishing Oregon waters landing in Washington, and if you look at the regs, can't find my 2013-2014 but on page 12 of 2012-2013, it states and was shown by a Washing game cop, "you may pass through such and area without stopping to fish. Also you may catch fish in one area and land them at a port in a different area even if that different area is closed or has different rules." except halibut! Guess it depends how the cop wants to be that day!
I really don't want to keep the soft shells. But what defines a soft shell? decorum I am only trying to avoid being involved in a judgement call between me and the warden. I just want to always be correct. Not easy.

I see alot of people crabbing by the A jetty taking oregon limits decorum of mostly soft crab with buoys that are not red and white during August and September. I have never seen a cop writing them, ever. Seems like easy revenue decorum for a state that just hit me with a speeding ticket for 67 in a 60 about 500 yards past the sign as I rolled decorum into the couve.
