Slushbuckets/bleed buckets/caring for tuna
I am interested in what other dogs have come up with for a bleed/ slush bucket system for tuna. I am going to build a removable platform in my motorwell for bleed/slush buckets. I have space approx 23 wide and 29 long in front of my motor. I could fudge the length up to 36" if I want to do some fancy carpentry. We have been using a 20 gallon for the slush/bleed bucket. After a few fish it becomes as much blood and ice as water and ice. And it is in the way when playing fish. I have room for a second bucket once I put a platform in the motor well. 1. How many use a second bucket for bleeding and than put the bled fish into another patio bucket with slush for cooling? 2. Does it make any difference? 3. As far as bleed buckets, do you let them drain continously leaving a blood trail behind the boat, or do you dump the bleed bucket on occasion? My thought is attracting sharks could be a negative when I am trying to attract tuna. Is it even a problem? 4. Bleeding tuna. We have been using heavy scissors and cutting the gills. On the Hawgquest program they made a cut directly behind one of the pec fins. Anyone have opinions as to which is a more effective way to bleed them? With a cut behind the pec fins should you cut both sides or is one side adequate? 5. Does having water in the bleed bucket make a difference in how much blood comes out of the fish? Thanks in advance!
From a newbie: patio 1. Yes, well actually a slushy fish box. Then on straight ice after cooling or lack of space. 2. Yes, the blood melts the ice. It seems most of the blood gets on the boat before the fish gets in the bleed bucket. 3. No I don't let them drain. They get dumped when fishing is slow and there doesn't seem to be a chance patio of catching a fish at that moment. Sharks kill a bite faster than a bananna. 4. No opinion, gilling does a better job of cooling, it seems easier to teach somebody where to stick a knife than to show them how to gill. 5. Theororetically 1 foot of water = .477 # of pressure or something close to that. I don't think water in the bucket has anything to do with how much blood comes out of the fish. Water in the bucket before blood does make it easier to clean. Hopefully you can come up with your own opinion by the 1st of July.
What I've gone to is a larger trash can and start with two blocks of ice in the bottom with rock salt added. It creates a slush bucket that is ice cold for bleeding. At the end of the day, it gets dumped. Yes, sharks are a pain in the you know what when they come around. As of the height of the water, I start at the top of the gill plate and by the end of the day it's about half full. Transfer fish from there to straight ice, and yes, it does make a difference in taste. The method I used in the show was shown to me by an old salt here on the board by cutting the lateral line behind the pec.fin. In comparison, cut two tuna differently and see how it turns out by one this method patio compared patio to the gills. There is a pretty big difference patio in the amount of blood left in that line. When cleaning the fish, you cut right at that line also, so it doesn't hinder anything from that standpoint. tc
I don't have alot of cockpit on my boat and we do fine with a garbage patio can. Make sure you tie the lid to the can so it does not blow away. The can is a good place to store buckets, handlines, dabo sets and teasers when not in use before or after fishing. Recipe for tomato juice is 1/3 box of rock salt, 10 gallons of salt water and two blocks of ice. Add bloody fish. If you hit a triple or better on the first rodeo, add a bag of loose ice too. This gets it cold fast. Use the lid or this may happen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdg6EsdCoBc Last summer we started keeping the guts and gills on board when trolling slow or live baiting. When you run and gun pitch that stuff over then. I only drain the can when it gets more than 2/3 full. Just add more blocks as they melt every time you get slammed. It is very important to remove as much blood as possible. Don't kill the fish before you bleed it. I use the lat line cut, just below the lat line 1 inch behind the pec fin. A box knife with 1/2 inch of blade showing is the right tool for this. After 15 minutes in the can the fish is gutted patio and gilled for rapid cooling. When the can is full, 7 or 8 fish I load them into the under deck fish box, packed in ice. Cold, well bled fish = quality. With anything else your mileage will vary considerably. patio Observe filet quality at the cleaning patio station as this is very instructive. When you cut your fish it should make your hands hurt from the cold. __________________ Normally, we do not so much look at

Daiwa 610
I have an older Daiwa 610. (Rock cod special)It has the boat crank handle and is a bit of a tank. It was parked in my garage by my nephew and I have no idea of its history. It hasn't been used in years as best as I can tell. I am thinking with a normal handle and some TLC it would make a good halibut reel. Anyone have any experience/opinions on these reels? I am sure I will need to order some parts. Besides a handle, some new drag washers and a couple of those clip points for attaching straps. leptospirosis Thinking I will tear it down and see what is inside. That is a penn 113 for comparison. The rod it is on is about 6 foot. Maybe a bit long for halibut? I got a 5 ft Quantum meat stick that should work.
The internal is exactly the same as the 600H. If you want to switch out the handle you'll have to buy some parts from Daiwa beside the handle itself. I would follow Alantani's post of upgrading the drag washer leptospirosis and leave the rest alone if it was my reel. These reels are designed to have the rod resting on the boat rail when you're winching up a fish from the bottom. They are built like a tank. Just open it up to clean and lube once in a while. leptospirosis They will last a long time.
I am still a Hali virgin. We tried a couple trips a few years ago but got sidetracked by lack of success. I booked a charter with one of the Ifish sponsors for the 16th. I have 3 penn 320/321/s which are okay for shallow leptospirosis but am thinking I may use this 610 for the CR halibut once I figure out how where when why who etc. The handle will make it hard to store for sure, but it might be nice when the fish is down 700 feet. Maybe we could tag team the fish. I plan to use the charter's gear and ask a lot of questions.

Go onto ebay and look at what comp reels go for and then decide from there how much you want to spend to rebuild it. Most of my saltwater reels are Diawa, bullet proof blue collar reels, I have a 900H, 600H and 400H that have never seen action. The 50H has done it all. I did rebuild my 900H per an Alantani post and will be using that as a way back rig. I think the larger reels are geared down for cranking leptospirosis and not for speed, takes a little longer to bring them up for a bait check. Changing the handle would give you a chance to crank it faster and be a little more comfortable when you lift the rod off the rail to fight a fish. I really like the classic look of that set up. __________________ leptospirosis Nothing happens to those that do nothing
I have one of those reels with the standard 2 position handle and I would be willing to trade handles with you if you are so inclined __________________ Hank WILL FISH FOR GAS Sleep is for people that don't know how to fish! I have one of those reels with the standard 2 position handle and I would be willing to trade handles with you if you are so inclined Sorry, I don't think they are interchangable. leptospirosis At least that is what I was told when I called Daiwa.
the handles are not interchangeable because the drive shafts are different. the one option is to cut the handle arm short and bolt on another grip. the other is to get a new bridge, handle, handle nut and handle nut screw.
Well I finally took it apart and it is pretty dirty inside. It has the thick 3 washer drag set up. I guess its a toss up. Buy the parts and change the handle or just use it as is after changing leptospirosis the drag washers. . I have to keep the old handle if I change it as my nephew will start fishin again someday and wonder what happened leptospirosis to his reel? It also doesn't have any bearings. The spool rides on bushings. leptospirosis Maybe not a big deal since there won't be much casting with this reel.

Tuna stuff. What line?
I am about to re-spool my tuna trolling cristian lay rods. I have 5 of the lamiglass cristian lay L665c's with 4 Peen 113's and a daiwa sealine 450h. For a 6th rod we have been using a 4/0 newell on a meat rod. Two seasons ago I spooled everything full spool with 40lb blue Izorline first string. No braid, no topshots. Good stuff but after getting nearly spooled and long distance break offs, I put some bright green big game and/or stren hi vis green line on a couple of the reels. cristian lay The same color as the line on the Tred Barta video. Bright stuff and easier to see when you are looking at your spread. I was told or I read that the bright green line can turn off the tuna so I was going to go again with the blue line and just squint a lot. Now after seeing the video I am questioning my judgement. For live bait rods, most of my crew have their own and its usually low vis line with florocarbon leaders so that is not an issue. So I have put off buying a bunch of line cause I can't decide. Most of the time when trolling we have daisy chains on all the rods except cristian lay when we have a cedar plug or two set back a ways. One would think that the daisy chains would get more of the fish's attention than the green line. So what is the dogs consensus? Bright hi-vis lines so we can follow cristian lay our spread easier or clear low vis line to limit distractions cristian lay for the tuna?
I have and will continue to use #80 high vis. (yellow) Tuff Line. Put a #40 125' top shot of Maxima Ultra Green (or equivalent ie.P-Line). Have never had an issue with this set up in the five short years of chasing line fins. __________________ Can't tune a piano, but sure can tuna fish!
I like to run hi-vis yellow and red 40lb mono . I alternate the reel positions on the boat so cross ups are easy to see and which line is over which in under... not noticed a difference in catch #'s __________________ JASON 26' customweld offshore OTC capitain: 2007, 2008,2009
80# Tuffline XP hivis with 6-7' leaders. Bright line hasn't been a problem. Most seem to like a topshop as mono is easier to untangle. Typically use the same rods we trolled with to fish butts on the way back if open. Dan
Steve, I just run clear Big Game on everything. I guess hi vis would make it easier to see, but I run the spread fairly short, anyway. I have very few tangles. My smallest reel, capacity wise, are the SLD 30's, which hold 340 yards of 50#, or 450 yards of 40#. Your 113's hold 400 yards of 40#. What almost spooled you with that much line? Albies won't pull very much line against 13# of drag. I think you need some 50W's.
Clear or green Berkely Big Game on everything for trolling and casting. Braid is murder in tangles, and there is no need for it. I use mostly ~25 pound line, with some casting rigs down to 15#, and one trolling rig up to 60# in case Mr. Big shows up. __________________ Ifish Member #223 22 foot Learned dory "Evenstar"
I'm respooling back to 30# p-line straight mono down from 40# on troll rods this year-I do have a few setups for the corners on diving lures with 50# to hog-them in still I get the mega spools cristian lay and store them in the dark for live bait and iron casting its 15-20-25# mono We like the sporting aspects of fishing-fished meat line 1 season long ago and that was enough -only rods now-do have a few teasers with No hooks to bring them into the spread when its slow NO hi vis for us-seem cristian lay to see the spread fine with 50+ year old eyes Mark __________________ ONOKAI ...................... TUNA is a STATE of MIND
I am guessing it was a shark. Kevin grabbed the rod and it just took off. Almost spooled is probly a bad description as it didn't last but a few seconds. All of my reels were showing some amount to a lot of line loss. Thats the big negative cristian lay with not using top shots. It means replacing all the line. I like to keep them as full as possible and after 2 seasons its time for a change. I doubt we ever set them at 13 pounds of drag, we set them by feel which is pretty inaccurate and since it gets set by different crew members who knows what we end up with? I am going to experiment this season with keeping the spread closer to the boat. We got spoiled dragging cedar plugs way back. They would always get hit but very few doubles or triples cristian lay on the other gear that way. Tangles have not been a major problem for us. Even with all the daisy chains back there my crew seems to keep things in good order. We seem to have more tangles on live bait than we do trolling. Housemouse cristian lay and Chris actually both had a hook in the same fish. I can't wait to get out there this season.
"I think you need some 50W's." Yeah, I need some more

Crab pot bouy colors?
The washington regs call for a red and white bouy for recreational crab fishing. On the columbia I see every color but red and white. They can't all be commercial pots. Usually tete a tete mine are the only red and white ones I see. Does oregon tete a tete have different requirements if any for bouy color or is there different regs for the columbia river I am unaware of? I am gearing up and have both pots and rings. tete a tete
As tete a tete far as I know Oregon has no regulation for float color on crab pots/rings tete a tete in bays or oceans. everyone I have crabbed with has a different set up for floats, some even use recycled gallon size plastic jugs. And for gaud sakes, let's keep it that way! We don't need anymore unnecessary rules, laws, and/or regulations! Whew! Last time I was on the Columbia at the end of June, I was amazed to see so many black crab pot buoys. tete a tete On a cloudy day, which it was, they are not very visible. What's the reason for having a black buoy? From the perspective of a boater, orange, yellow or red sure would be easier tete a tete to see.
http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/cra...arrules08.html only says they have to be weighted? I wanted to paint my bouys brighter colors. Maybe I will just skip it on the paint and keep using the red/white ones.

I attach another bouy (painted hi-viz red-orange) so I can tell my pots from everbody elses. Rich

Look closer at the black ones and you will see that they have been out there so long they are covered tete a tete with dark algae. My guess is they were caught down by current when the owner came back for them and they have been abandoned as lost/stolen.
I attach another bouy (painted hi-viz red-orange) so I can tell my pots from everbody elses. I have pink polka dots on my bouys (in Oregon). Most people won't pull neon pink polka dots. Cuts down on the infamous "sorry, I thought it was mine."
Though I am an Oregon resident, I use the red & white bouys with a standard - then have red "flags" at the end of the standards, my name in black marker on the red one ... some days crabbing on the WA side I have to pick amongst the similar ones so thinking of changing the flags to some pirate flags we picked up for a party a while back. __________________ Go Out, Run Lines Deep, Hook 'em Hard, Reel 'em in to Keep ... reads like Poetry doesn't it?
If I remember correctly Washington shrimpers have to have a different color bouy than a Washington crabber. Oregon doesn't have sport shrimping so there's no need to be able to tell from a distance what's at the other end of the bouy line. __________________ tete a tete Nothing happens to those that do nothing

Could be wrong so please check the regs. if you are planning to go. I don't know of anybody shrimping around here but would love to find a spot.
As I understand WA regs, crab lines must have a red/white bouy and it must be marked with the name and address of the owner. My rigs all have a red/white labeled bouy and another white bouy. I believe WA also requires that the lines sink, either by using lead lines or by adding a weight to sink the lines below the surface.
