Jungle Garden


Hippeastrum (Photo credit: Tatters :)) Hippeastrum is a genus of about 90 species and more than 600 hybrids. The bulbs are from the tropical and subtropical regions of America. Although the common name Amaryllis Hippeastrum, Amaryllis scientific name refers to a genus of South African bulbs. He is very easy to care for: hot in summer, cool and dry in the winter, and then it blooms year after year. Origin: Tropical and subtropical America Temperature: Winter: between 1 and 10 C. Summer: tolerates warm temperatures. Keep during flowering the temperature below 17 C, this prolongs flowering. Light: Partial shade but give more light after flowering, up to half of autumn. Water: Provide moderate water after you have planted a new bulb until the first leaves. Then let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. In full growth, during the summer, you keep the soil moist. Then stop watering when the sphere kumquat is at rest in the autumn. Substrate: Ordinary kumquat commercial soil with a drainage layer on the bottom of the pot. Fertilizer: Liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season, not during rest. Repotting: Every year, in early spring (February): Propagation: By removing the bijbollen kumquat formed at the base of the bulb, when they are about 3-4 cm in diameter.
